On Saturday, April 17th, covered by City Weekend,
Globus wine held our first ever People’s Choice awards.Fourteen people came to taste fourteen
wines, completely blind.Three of
the tasters were professionally trained tasters in the wine business. The tasting highlighted the differences
in opinion between these two groups of tasters: The Professionals and the
Non-Professionals.We have let
“the people” speak, and put the top three voted wines (combined scores) on
promotion. An article will be
published in the first week of May in City Weekend. For the month of May we will have these wines on promotion,
10% off.
Many of the non-professional tasters suffered a little
palate fatigue half way through the tasting, and their judging of wines was
stricter than the pro’s when looking at the scores. In fact it is easier to criticize a wine, or any other
product, than to praise it.Focusing on the positives of a wine can be quite difficult, and people
tend to get wrapped up in being a hard critic. With lack of experience it is difficult to truly asses wine,
and draw judgement based on set criteria. At the end of the day however, THERE WERE NO EMPTY GLASSES!All wines seemed to be enjoyed.
The results were almost as expected but with a few curves
here and there.The first five
wines were white, one of which made it into the top three. The averaged scores from both groups,
and then combined were as follows. The yellow indicates the top three in each category.
